Flashing a bricked HP Mini 1000 (1151NR)

Note: This worked with a 1GB USB stick, but not a 8GB one. YMMV.

Update: working rom image now available - this works at least on the 1151NR

You'll see many places around that tell you how to recover from a bad AMI BIOS flash or how to flash a custom BIOS, but it works a bit different on the HP Minis that use AMI. Before trying this, please make sure you have a known good ROM to flash back to if your modified one doesn't work.

As usual, the AMI BIOS will allow you to reflash via an AMIBIOS.ROM file on a USB stick - but it must be DOS bootable, and you must use the *right* control key.

So:

  1. make a bootable DOS USB stick (google for it, there are some tools)
  2. copy any ROM image for your machine model to it (in the case of the 1151NR, a ROM from many of the other HP Mini 1000 models will work).
  3. rename the ROM file to AMIBOOT.ROM
  4. while holding the right ctrl+left arrow key, power on the system
  5. within 10 seconds, you should see the AMI update utility start to do an update, and some dots going across the screen. It may take a couple tries to work.
  6. if you computer didn't automatically reboot, remove the battery and power, then plug it back in and turn it on. You should see "CMOS checksum bad" once, and then it should boot normally.

  1. This worked for me, except “CMOS checksum bad” message will not go away. It say that on every boot and then reboots. I cannot press F9 or F10 or load the O/S.

    Any ideas?

  2. Jeff,

I had the same problem with a couple of my ROM images. I eventually used a ROM image from a different HP Mini 1000 series, and it worked great. There are a few sites you can find ROM images at. If you still have trouble, I can shoot you the image I’m currently using, though it is only known to work on the 1151NR, and it is heavily modified to work with my specific wireless cards.

  3. I would appreciate it if you can tell me the sites that have ROM files. I am having trouble finding them. I have a HP Mini 1030NR. I have tried 2 ROM images that I found on the internet – the both reboot over and over. I would like to try some older ones. I would also be fine with trying the one that works for you. You could just email it to jtaylor113@gmail.com. Thanks for the help!

  4. Lokkju,

I have not been able to find a ROM that works. Could you please email me the ROM file that you used? Or maybe point me to the places you think have these ROMs? I spoke with HP and they want $175 to fix this problem for me. Too bad they won’t simply email the correct ROM file to me. They claim that they don’t have these files.

  5. Hi,

Like Jeff I had the same problem. I’ve been searching for the right ROM file for my netbook. I have used one and I can now enter the BIOS utility but then it does not detect my hard disk. Maybe because I got a wrong ROM file. can you email me yours at ljcerezo@yahoo.com? I would really appreciate it. Thanks

  6. I have hp mini 1101 and rom image could any one help me!!!!!

  7. See the update to the post – I’ve uploaded a generic ROM image that works for me. At some point, I’ll load and then dump the newest available ROM…

  8. hi lokkju,
